I took a meeting the other day with a fellow named Sam Bodkin, aka “Heavy Meadow”: when he walked in the door, tiny guitar in hand, deftly plucking out a few notes to check the acoustics of the gallery before we even shook hands, I knew things were about to get good. He didn’t even need to finish describing the evening of live acoustic music he was envisioning — brass or strings echoing through the gallery, listeners sitting intimately close to the musicians or soaking in the dulcet tones from the mezzanine above — before getting a resounding YES from me.
Sam is the founder of an astoundingly well-put together cooperative called Groupmuse that organizes ‘historical music’ (classic, jazz, roots) concerts in non-traditional spaces, such as living rooms, church basements, and public parks in an effort to make music that’s typically found in high-brow venues more approachable and community-focused. I’m honored to be hosting one such concert next week, and really hope you’ll join us.
You can get tickets through the event page here (and I do highly recommend signing up for the site!), or by replying to this email. This is a relaxed, informal gathering — consider it more of a casual house party than a black tie affair. Bring your own drinks, maybe a snack to share. Bring a friend (or a hot date!). Come support live music so we can keep doing this all the time.
DTLA ART NIGHT: LA Syndicate Takeover
WHAT: LA Syndicate Takeover for Art Night!
WHEN: April 04 (this Thursday!) 6-10pm
WHERE: Lucky Cat DTLA - 620 S Main St, Los Angeles 90014
You know that spot next door to the gallery that always seems to have the most fashionable crowd dancing to impeccable beats every Artwalk? Yeah, that’s LA Syndicate, and this month, they’re taking over Lucky Cat Gallery. There’s some A-list artist names that skateboarding fans will recognize, along with some great up-and-coming artists, including one of our own Lucky Cat members. As usual: there’s so many great galleries all walking distance from here, but we know you’ll want to end the night with us here, as this will be the best show on the block. More on our Instagram here.
Get Involved.
We’ve got fifteen studios available at the gallery, starting as low as $350/month (and one rare opening at the Candy Factory!). If you’ve been thinking about taking your creative practice to the next level, Lucky Cat is the place to try it.
Already got a place to make stuff, but want to show it off at one of our events? Reply to this email with your portfolio (or Instagram or whatever), and we’ll put you on the list for our next group show.
Think you’ve got the chops to run a show yourself? We’re looking for 12 curators over the next 12 months to set up shows for each Art Night (first Thursday of each month). If you’ve got a great idea for that (or for any other event!), let’s talk.
Hope to see you all soon!
