I’m very excited to announce that we have not only one, but two very good reasons for you to come down to the gallery for Downtown Art Night two weeks from now.
FIRST: Josh Steichmann (historian, dark room master, and maker of a damn fine nocino), has curated an outstanding collection of photographic works in a show called "Topophany”.
What, exactly, does that word mean? From the writeup: “A play on the word theophany, a manifestation of a deity in tangible form, the artists of Topophany take a decidedly unlofty, street level approach. Though photographic techniques, the works in Topophany focus on the evidence of the human, and our intervention in the spaces we inhabit, exploit, live and work.” (Read more on this page in Artillery Mag.)
The show makes excellent use of the gallery’s wide-open spaces to give each of the artists’ creations plenty of room to be enjoyed slowly, individually — as they should be, because every single offering has detail or depth or cleverness that will leave the curious viewer feeling like they’ve seen a part of the city they maybe shouldn’t have, but are all the better for it.
THEN: Greg Thomas (roaster of Trystero Coffee, host of the chillest espresso hour in town, and man with his finger on the pulse of the underground music scene) is hosting a “noise show” that night. For those not in the know: noise music explores and pushes the boundaries of what is musical vs unwanted: “what is noise to one person can be meaningful to another; what was considered unpleasant sound yesterday is not today”. There’s a lot of circuit bending and experimental synthesizers (I’m a big nerdy fan of the ‘theremin’), and the occasional accordion and trash can lid as instruments. If nothing else, it’s a spectacle to observe, so you can impress your co-workers with tales of how avant garde your adventures are.

As usual, we’re not the only happening concern on Art Night — there’s a whole ecosystem of art and music that’ll be flourishing on these city blocks that evening. Come by, say hi, have a drink at our little “speakeasy”, and go explore!
