One of the more interesting architectural features of our gallery is its church-like acoustics: not great for drum kits or holding secret conversations, but absolutely thrilling when you bring acoustic music into it. In fact, if someone asked me to pick any instrument in the world to play here, a cello would be my first pick: the slow, low string notes echoing longingly throughout the space, playful motifs chasing each other ‘round the pillars…
Once again, Groupmuse delivers. Not one, but five cellos will play a series of classic madrigals interspersed with ones written for this specific quintet on this lovely Saturday afternoon. A classical concert in the gallery is a special occasion that happens very rarely — you won’t want to miss it! Check out this beautiful sample of Sakura playing some Brahms, and get tickets here.
MAY 18: Cycles of LA: A celebration of local bike culture
WHAT: An art and music show for the people who love bikes
WHEN: May 18th, 4-9pm
WHERE: Lucky Cat DTLA - 620 S. Main St, Los Angeles 90014
BRING: something for the bar, and two wheels if ya got ‘em!
To say I’ve been into bikes since moving downtown is an understatement: riding is an addiction, but a good one that makes you happy, healthy, and hyper-connected to place and time. The bicycle isn’t just a mode of transportation: for many of us, it’s an escape, a community, a way of life. Some cyclists race. Some ride to places cars can’t get to. Some turn their bikes into art. We all love a good party.
This Sunday will be an art show, but more than anything, it will be a gathering of the tribes. Fancy bikes, fast bikes, fun bikes — scenes that may not ride together, but know the same paths — all in once place for the moment, reminiscing about the good old days, planning dumb shit for future good times. There’ll be live music, food, coffee, tattoos, freak bikes, art, and relics of the rides that forever live in our hearts. If you want the full experience, start at Ciclavia, and join the parade led by Bicicrofono from there to the gallery.
